The Commissar Order
Ordered all captured Commissars (i.e. the political officers of the
Soviet Armed Forces) to be “eliminated”
immediately. In short, they were not to be treated as
prisoners of war – even if they surrendered. Nor
were they to be accorded any kind of trial, but simply murdered.
